The Shinjuku

The Shinjuku takes its name from the district whose principle it follows — a street-level plainness concealing an interior of unexpected depth. The room sits on the second floor of the courtyard elevation, its window looking south across the hotel's private karesansui garden. The walls are clad in hand-pulled washi paper, pale and warm as old ivory, sourced from an Ogawa-machi papermaker whose family has produced ceremonial sheets for the Imperial Household for six generations. The bed is framed in pale hinoki with bedside tables in patinated iron; a writing desk by a Kyoto joiner faces the window. The Oya stone bathroom houses a walk-in rainfall shower and a deep hinoki wooden soaking tub positioned to face the raked gravel below. A quiet room, without spectacle — the kind that registers fully only after you have left it.
