The Kabuki

The Kabuki is a room that understands theatre. On the eighth floor of the northern elevation, the principal salon's three floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Kabuki-za Theatre at close range — the gilded rooftop, the traditional architectural programme above the portico, the copper-green eaves catching morning and evening light in entirely different ways. The ceiling of the salon is the suite's primary architectural statement: original Meiji-era lacquerwork friezes — pine, chrysanthemum, and theatrical mask — restored over eleven months by a specialist conservator from Kyoto to their original gilded programme. The walls are hung with antique Kabuki drawings and ukiyo-e woodblock prints sourced from a Tokyo auction over three years. The Oya stone bathroom — warm honey-toned stone against a floor of dark Aji granite — positions its freestanding hinoki soaking tub to face the window and the theatre beyond. A grand piano in the salon, tuned monthly, is available for guests on request.
